“I remember writing my first song when I was 9 years old and preaching my first sermon when I was 10. A lot of life has been lived since then with all its highs and lows and places in between. I’ve seen some dreams come true, some pass by and some dreams I’ve never even thought of dreaming come to pass. I’ve always been drawn to purpose in my life and when my path has veered at times, purpose has always beckoned me to return and follow. I’ve been blessed to be a part of so many amazing things and have a story to share …as we ALL do. This site shares just a little of my story.” – John Mathis Jr.
It is really no surprise that John would pursue a creative outlet for expressing his life experiences through songwriting. His father, Country Johnny Mathis, was a successful singer and BMI Award Winning songwriter in his own right with cuts that ranged from artists like George Jones to Elvis Costello. 10 Country Music Hall of Fame inductees have recorded his father’s music. This made songwriting and music publishing a natural transition and passion for John that led to his own successes in music. As a music publisher and songwriter John has garnered cuts by The Legendary The Florida Boys & The Inspirations, The Crist Family, The Wilburns, The Pfeifers, Allison Speer, GRAMMY Winner Brad Davis, GRAMMY Winner & Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Charley Pride and many others.
John’s life and music pursuits have garnered decades of experience in the Southern Gospel, Bluegrass and Country Music industries. During his career John has had the opportunity to work with artists such as Triumphant Quartet, Palmetto State, Three Bridges, Allison Speer, TG Sheppard, GRAMMY Winner Brad Davis, T. Graham Brown, Trick Pony, John Berry and many others. His experience has not only covered the areas of songwriting and music publishing but allowed him to work in many industry areas such as radio promotion, publicity, A&R, audio/video production, distribution and record label management.
Some of those ealry years were spent working with labels such as Homeland Entertainment, label home for such renowned Southern Gospel artists as The Cathedrals, The Speer Family, Hoppers, Bishops and The Florida Boys to name a few. After Homeland, through a joint business venture with Brian Speer (The Avid Group), John worked for clients such as Three Angels Broadcasting (the second largest Christian broadcasting network in the world) and the late Anthony Burger. John began working with Mansion Entertainment in 2009 in the areas of label management, music publishing, press & publicity, radio, music recording & production and video production.
John has also worked with televisions shows such as Nashville Country Revival (hosted by Darrell Freeman) and seen on DAYSTAR, TNN, GEB TV, RURAL TV, LeSEA, Bluehighways TV and other national networks. Nashville Country Revival was one of the first TV shows in the Southern Gospel, Bluegrass Gospel and Country Gospel genres exclusively featuring concept video content. He has also produced artist concept videos airing on national platforms such as “Never Give The Devil A Ride” by Brad Davis (Daystar, Heartland and others) and “Crucified” by Crosby Lane (GAC TV and other national outlets).
His work with Mansion Entertainment has involved radio releases charting on national radio charts and albums appearing on Billboard Albums sales charts and placement in national retail outlets such as Cracker Barrel through distribution partnerships with Sony RED and The Orchard.
Avid Group Publishing, John’s publishing company, holds copyrights recorded by legendary artists such as Johnny Paycheck, Carl Smith, Bobby Helms, Jim Lauderdale and others. Recent placement of copyrights include documentaries like ‘Rolling Papers’ and on GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Charley Pride’s new album, ‘Music In My Heart’.
John writes the monthly feature article, ‘Life In A Song’, for The Singing News magazine, the country’s largest Christian Music publication. He has written and released a new book aimed at helping aspiring songwriters with their careers, ‘The Songwriter’s Guide To Taking The Next Steps’. He is a husband to a wonderful wife, Angie, a father and a grand-father. John is still writing songs, managing a record label, several publishing catalogs and writing a new book for songwriters.
